SENDAI--A dog was reunited with its owner after it was found adrift at sea three weeks after the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11.
The dog, Ban, a brown mixed-breed female, was plucked from the remains of a roof 1.8 kilometers off Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, on Friday.
Ban barked happily on Monday when it recognized its owner, a woman from Kesennuma.
The dog came through its ocean adventure in good shape, officials said.
The woman e-mailed a photo and a description of Ban to the Japan Coast Guard after seeing media reports that a similar dog had been saved.
The woman, who is staying at an evacuation center in Sendai, visited the prefectural animal care center Monday afternoon to pick up her dog.
When Ban was located Friday afternoon, it was frightened and tried to evade rescuers on the roof, according to coast guard officials. Once saved, it was given water, cookies and sausages.
Ban arrived at Shiogama port in Miyagi Prefecture on Saturday afternoon and was taken to the prefectural animal care center.
