Diving equipment maker Zero Co. has developed an underwater tsunami alert system to help keep divers safe.
The device was specifically developed for licensed divers involved in activities associated with rebuilding operations following the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The alert system consists of a floater 50 centimeters in diameter, from which an underwater speaker hangs down.
The device notifies divers within a 500-meter radius of the speaker of imminent danger by emitting alert sounds and announcing, “A tsunami alert has been issued.”
“The system can also improve the safety of divers involved in fishing and recreational pursuits,” the chief of the company's sales division said.
