KAMAISHI, Iwate Prefecture--Kindergarten pupils in disaster-stricken Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, are gargling several times a day to stave off a virulent strain of influenza spreading across the nation.
At Daiichi Kindergarten in Kamaishi, children always gargle after playing outside and before lunch.
The kindergarten has taken in children from Unosumai Kindergarten, also in Kamaishi, whose building was destroyed in the tsunami following the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Staff at the kindergarten said they have another concern. Work to dismantle and remove damaged homes is kicking up dust, making it difficult to open windows at the kindergarten for ventilation. The work is expected to continue through March.
