Theaters in the three disaster-stricken prefectures in northeastern Japan on March 11, the one-year anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, will offer free admission to the live broadcast of U.S. pop singer Cyndi Lauper’s concert in Tokyo.
Lauper has been a noted supporter of Japan through the disaster and asked that her performance be shown without charge at four theaters in Kitakami in Iwate Prefecture; Natori and Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture; and Fukushima, capital of Fukushima Prefecture.
Her performance in Tokyo's Shibuya will also be broadcast live at theaters in 10 other sites across Japan, according to Wowow Inc., a satellite broadcaster.
Lauper arrived in Japan in the immediate wake of the quake and tsunami to give concerts in Nagoya, Tokyo and Osaka as originally scheduled, although many foreign entertainers cancelled their tours.
The 58-year-old singer has also called on the international community to extend help and support to disaster victims.
Lauper is expected to talk about next month’s concerts in Japan and her feelings toward the people in the affected regions at the 54th Grammy Awards ceremony, to be held in Los Angeles on Feb. 12.
