The system cost 2.6 billion yen ($33 million) to create and was up and running Feb. 21.
It measures air radiation levels of gamma rays at a height of 50 centimeters above the ground in kindergartens, day care centers and elementary schools and at a height of 1 meter above the ground at junior high and senior high schools and at other public facilities.
The measurement stations operate on solar cells and use built-in cellphone devices to transmit data automatically to a server computer operated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
The website, which shows the locations of radiation gauges on a map, allows the user to check out current radiation levels and how they changed.
