Tokyo Electric Power Co. released images on March 6 showing the removal of a large girder from the top floor of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant’s No. 4 reactor building.
A large crane was used to winch the girder, which measures 32 meters by 10 meters and weighs 100 tons, off the building on March 5.
TEPCO plans to remove the entire steel frame and shell of the building above the five-story building’s top floor by the end of June. It then plans to remove the containment vessel lid and other equipment by the end of August.
A crane attached to the girder was used to move the containment vessel lid and other equipment in the reactor building.
One of the major challenges now facing the team working on the No. 4 reactor is how to remove spent fuel from the storage pool on the fifth floor.
TEPCO plans to install a cover above the reactor building once the fifth floor is dismantled, and build facilities to move the spent fuel into a common storage pool within the grounds of the stricken nuclear plant.
