JAXA develops camera that 'visualizes' radiation levels
English Description

Japan's space agency says it has developed a camera that can measure radiation levels and determine their distribution patterns.

According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the device will be a boon to surveys of radioactive contamination spewed by the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The camera captures gamma rays emitted by cesium-137 and other radioactive substances. It shows radiation levels in different colors; red, blue and yellow, for example.

Its performance was corroborated by field tests in Iitate, Fukushima Prefecture, JAXA said March 29.
