More than 1,000 protesters marched in Tokyo on April 22 calling for a nuclear-free society.
The demonstration was part of Earth Day Tokyo, an environmental event held in Yoyogi Park in Shibuya Ward. Protesters were carrying green carp streamers ahead of Children's Day on March 5 to underline the message that they want a nuclear-free future for the younger generations.
“It is not necessary for our country to develop the economy further by shouldering risks from nuclear power plants,” said 33-year-old Fumi Azumi, who took part in the event with her children and friends.
On the Children’s Day holiday, the No. 3 reactor of the Tomari nuclear power plant in Hokkaido will be suspended for regular inspections, leaving Japan with no operating reactors.
