KORIYAMA, Fukushima Prefecture--A pig farm here has been ordered to recall and scrap pork it shipped to market after high radioactive cesium levels were detected in the meat.
The meat was found to contain up to 107.2 becquerels of cesium per kilogram, exceeding the central government's safety standard of 100 becquerels per kilogram for general food items, the Koriyama city government said May 22.
None of the pork is circulating in the market, the city government said.
This is the first time that cesium levels in pork have exceeded the safety standard since new levels took effect in April, a health ministry official said. The safety limit of the cesium level in general food items was 500 becquerels per kilogram until it was revised to 100 becquerels in March.
