More than 10,000 official documents have been recovered from the muck and mire left behind in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, 2011.Now Fuji Xerox Co. is sending employees and scanner-copiers to the city to transfer the recovered documents into a digital format.Nearly 260 young employees will wash and dry the documents, which include historical materials and student lists, and digitize them at an elementary school and a community center over three days from June 12.The documents will be restored in both electronic and paper formats.Fuji Xerox decided to provide assistance after it was consulted by a local volunteer group about how to save mud-covered documents. It will be the first such project for the company. The employees will work as volunteers.Fuji Xerox also hopes to promote new business by encouraging government offices to digitize their official documents before a natural disaster.“The loss of important documents can be prevented if they are digitized in advance,” a company official said. “We hope the project will lead to new business.”
