For Sadaharu Mishina, running as an Olympic torchbearer in Britain on June 25 had special poignancy.“I ran, hoping people in the devastated areas will cheer up,” he said. “I want to say to my daughter that I did my best and thank you.”Mishina, 31, lives in the northern city of Sendai, parts of which were devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami last year.His 2-year-old daughter died in the disaster.Mishina was cheered through the suburbs of Leeds in the north of England. The torch relay is wending its way down the country ahead of the start of the London Olympics on July 27.
