TEPCO releases new photos of quake, tsunami and nuclear accident
English Description

Previously unseen photos show tsunami swamping reactor buildings and wrecking equipment at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, images which help explain the circumstances in which three reactors overheated and went into meltdown. The photographs are among 600 released by plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Sept. 11.They date from between March 11, 2011, when the magnitude-9.0 quake and tsunami struck, and March 28.TEPCO gathered the photos from its employees and staff of its contractors.Asked why TEPCO withheld the images until now, Junichi Matsumoto, acting general director of the company’s Nuclear Power and Plant Siting Division, said the records had needed sorting.“We were unsure exactly how many photos were left at the site and how many of those photos had not been disclosed before,” he said.
