Construction work resumes at Oma nuclear plant
English Description

Engineers have begun installing steel sheeting that will eventually line a containment vessel at the Oma nuclear power plant in Aomori Prefecture, which is currently under construction.Operator Electric Power Development Co. suspended construction after the devastating March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident but announced resumption on Oct. 1, 2012.It said the steel structure, 29 meters in diameter and nine meters tall, had been sitting outdoors since the quake, but that the company had been maintaining it with rust-proofing and paint. The structure, weighing about 200 tons, was lifted into position Oct. 10 by a custom-built crane.Local officials in Oma town have welcomed resumption of construction work, but opposition persists in localities in Hokkaido that face the site from across the Tsugaru Strait.
