English Description

OTSUCHI, Iwate Prefecture--Shoals of salmon have returned to a local river, an uplifting sign for residents that one of the many scars left by last year's earthquake and tsunami is finally healing. The Gensuigawa river, known for spawning salmon, was filled with rubble, earth and sand washed in by tsunami waves triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11.But the river now shows little sign of the devastation after members of the Self-Defense Forces and a crew of volunteers spent several months last year cleaning it up."I hope the people who came here to help with the cleanup will have a chance to see the fish," said Kazumi Tozawa, a 57-year-old resident. "I am grateful to the fish for returning to this river."
