Baby turtles return to sea on beach hit by 2011 tsunami
English Description

IWAKI, Fukushima Prefecture--Seventy baby loggerhead sea turtles whose births were threatened by the aftereffects of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year were released into the sea on Oct. 19.Officials from the Aquamarine Fukushima aquarium gathered up 127 eggs on Shin-Maiko beach in Iwaki after a resident reported finding traces of the eggs laid there in August. The sandy beach had been eroded by the tsunami spawned by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and there was a risk that the eggs could become submerged at high tide.Aquarium officials removed and care for the loggerhead sea turtle eggs until the baby turtles hatched. The little loggerheads were released on Shin-Maiko beach.
