Members of the renowned Vienna Philharmonic orchestra have visited the scene of last year's earthquake and tsunami, where they performed for survivors and for the souls of those who died.Sheltered from drizzle beneath umbrellas, the musicians played a piece by Bach in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture. The performance was part of activities aimed at children.Principal flutist Dieter Flury, 60, said music is food for the mind and he wanted to help children benefit from that. The musicians offered a silent prayer and performed on a hill called Hiyoriyama in the city's Yuriage district, a neighborhood that was literally wiped out by the tsunami spawned by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011.Flury said the sight of such devastation left him speechless. From that elevated spot, the sea could be seen in the distance.
