SAGA--The governor of Saga Prefecture, Yasushi Furukawa, said on July 1 that he wanted a meeting with Prime Minister Naoto Kan before making a final decision on whether to allow the Genkai nuclear power plant to resume operations at two of its reactors.
Furukawa has indicated that he is likely to give the green light to operations at the No. 2 and No. 3 reactors of Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s plant, which have been stopped for periodic inspections.
But, after a meeting of a special committee of the Saga prefectural assembly on nuclear plant safety measures on July 1, Furukawa said arrangements were being made to meet with the prime minister before announcing any decision.
"I want to ask Prime Minister Naoto Kan about his energy vision because that has become an important element in making my decision," he said.
Furukawa told the special committee that he expected to make a final decision in mid-July, after another meeting of the committee scheduled for July 11.
He said the prefectural government would hold an explanatory meeting for local residents July 8.
