Dozens of young evacuees floated 1,500 light-emitting diodes in the Nihonbashi River in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, on July 14, praying for a quick return to normality in their hometowns in Fukushima Prefecture.
The children, who were all evacuated from Fukushima to Yamanashi Prefecture because of the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 plant, called the lights, which radiated a bluish white color as they floated in the water, "inori-boshi" (prayer stars). The LEDs were collected downstream.
The event was part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the new Nihonbashi bridge.
