Giant vacuum cleaner deployed in Fukushima cleanup
English Description

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) is using a 25-meter-long vacuum truck to clean radioactive dust around the site of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The truck entered service this month after an experiment in August in which the level of radiation in the air about 1 meter above ground level was reduced by up to 53 percent to 0.62 sievert per hour by the vacuum system.

The machinery on the truck's trailer sucks up dust from the ground, which is then stored in a tank on the truck itself.
