Tohoku children's cakes express their hopes for the future
English Description

OTSUCHI, Iwate Prefecture--Rarely has a cake expressed such sincere feeling. Kanae Kurosawa’s topping, created at a baking workshop in a makeshift elementary school building in this tsunami devastated town, was a model of a home and garden.

The Akahama Elementary School third grader, whose family is living in temporary housing after being made homeless by the March 11 disaster, used a chocolate bar for the roof and an orange lollipop for a sun.

"It is my dream to build a new home for our family with the money I will earn after becoming a pharmacist," Kurosawa said.

Kurosawa was one of 61 pupils of Ando and Akahama elementary schools taking part in the workshop, called “dream cake,” on Oct. 19. The children were asked to describe their hopes for the future through baking.

Shinichi Shimizu, the leader of the private group that organized the event, said he hoped the session had helped the children.
