SENDAI--A quintet made up of members of the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic orchestra performed on Nov. 21 for hundreds of children from areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The group, visiting as UNICEF goodwill ambassadors, played three tunes, including "Sakura Sakura," a traditional Japanese folk song about cherry blossoms, at Tsutsujigaoka Elementary School in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The city's coastal districts were devastated on March 11.
Some 750 children in elementary and junior high schools attended the concert.
The Berlin Philharmonic organized a series of charity concerts in the aftermath of the disaster and has donated about 130,000 euros (13.5 million yen) to quake relief.
