A series of Asahi Shimbun photos capturing the horror and despair in the Tohoku disaster areas one month after the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake received a top prize in the Tokyo Press Photographers Association Award 2011.
The association, consisting of 34 newspaper, wire service and broadcasting companies, announced the winners in nine categories.
The Yomiuri Shimbun won the Tokyo Press Photographers Association Award, the top prize, for its "To mom" series of photos, which focused on children who lost their parents and other loved ones in the earthquake and tsunami.
The Asahi Shimbun's "Moment to pray--one month after the earthquake" photos, taken by Masaru Komiyaji, Shingo Kuzutani, Eijiro Morii, Naoko Kawamura and Shogo Koshida, won the project award in the domestic news category.
Another Asahi Shimbun photographer, Teruo Kashiyama, won the award in the general overseas news category for his shot of a high-speed train being buried in China after it was involved in a collision and derailed.
Jun Ueda, also of The Asahi Shimbun, won the encouragement award in overseas sports news for his picture of Nadeshiko Japan winning the Women's World Cup in Germany.
Ikuro Aiba, an Asahi Shimbun photographer, was named a winner of the encouragement award in the special award category for his photo titled "Unveiled crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant."
About 300 news photos, including the prize winners, will be shown at the 2011 News Photo Exhibition at the Mitsukoshi department store's main branch in Nihonbashi in Tokyo's Chuo Ward from Dec. 16 to 25. Admission is free.
