SEOUL--South Korea and Russia agreed on Dec. 9 to jointly conduct a survey on radioactive contamination in the seawater around the Japanese archipelago caused by the damaged Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
Seoul will likely use the survey as an opportunity to call on Tokyo to provide information about contaminated water in a more open and forthcoming manner.
According to South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, South Korea and Russia held a joint committee on the study of environmental issues in Seoul on Dec. 8-9.
Moscow and Seoul discussed issues relating to the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and other areas near the Japanese archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.
Some members of the South Korean government wanted Japan to be included in the joint survey, but that opinion was not widely supported due to Japan's perceived lack of openness over the release of radioactive water into the sea.
