360-degree video shows reality of disaster areas
English Description

Areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake were projected in the dome of a planetarium in Tokyo on Dec. 20 to provide a better perspective of the extent of the damage. The 30-minute video vividly showed the aftermath of the March 11 tsunami, from a cargo ship stranded on ground to a crumbled coastal levee and an expanse of wrecked homes, in coastal municipalities in Iwate Prefecture.Masami Okyudo, a professor of astronomy at Wakayama University, and others expect the video, shot in May with an omnidirectional camera installed atop a vehicle, will be used for anti-disaster education. The creators said they wanted to reproduce true-to-life images of the disaster areas, unavailable from often fragmented images. The showing on Dec. 20 was for researchers and government officials.
