SEOUL--One of South Korea's leading daily newspapers, the JoongAng Ilbo, has published a revised version of its front-page coverage of Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami, acknowledging its original headline, "Sinking Japan," was inappropriate.

The newspaper carried the "Sinking Japan" headline in its March 12 morning edition that reported on the Great East Japan Earthquake with a photo of northeastern Japan swamped by tsunami.
In its Dec. 27 morning edition, it carried an article explaining the original headline and why it was revised along with the redone page with new headlines and the original March 12 front page.
"It was long overdue, but we redid the page to give support to the Japanese people," it said.
The new headlines read, "Japan struck by huge disaster," and "Cheer up, Japan."
" 'Sinking Japan' was meant to report the appalling catastrophe in a dramatic way," the newspaper said. "We ended up hurting the Japanese who were already suffering, which was something we did not intend to do, and that deviated from the principle of this paper that places importance on the love of humanity."
The daily acknowledged that it had received criticism for the headline. The photo of the revised page was carried with other reports looking back on the major events of 2011.
