Jun 04, 2011When Wataru and Heidi Homeier Minezaki opened their home to evacuees from Fukushima to escape fallout from the earthquake-damaged Daiichi nuclear power plant, they knew their hospitality might be in vain. “In Japan, that offer (to leave one’s hometown) is unheard of,” said Heidi Minezaki, who grew up in Springfield and now lives with her husband in Sano, about 100 miles south of Fukushima. “They choose community over personal comfort.”
