June 14, 2011  The people of the Tohoku area are being confronted by the fact that the tsunami devastated much of the fishing, shellfish and seaweed cultivation industries vital to the livelihood and food culture of millions of people in Japan. Thousands of boats, fishing nets, floats, cultivation apparatus and various other pieces of equipment were either taken out to sea by the tsunami or strewn along the coast and further inland.
