02/27/2013 Seventy-five students and 10 faculty from the 108 student Okawa Elementary School, located at the foot of this hill, perished in the tsunami on 3/11/2011. On 3/11, when the massive earthquake shook, and the alarms blared, and the waters of the nearby Kitakami River all receded into the ocean, the attendants of Okawa Elementary school staid put. Despited their evacuation plan and manual, adults debated the best place to take the children to safety - and the minutes lost were critical.
