May 20, 2011 A team of NASA and Russian scientists says the atmosphere directly above the epicenter of the March 11 earthquake in Japan rapidly heated up in the days before the magnitude 9.0 event. In a presentation in Vienna, the researchers cited data indicating that starting on March 3, the electron count in the ionosphere -- the upper part of the atmosphere -- increased dramatically.
