KUWAIT CITY--Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed his gratitude to Kuwait on Aug. 26 for its help in restoring a coastal railway that was wrecked in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster that devastated northeastern Japan.
Abe passed on his appreciation during a meeting with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, during which he handed over a large cloth with words of thanks written by local residents of disaster-hit regions.
Responding to Abe who said it represents “our feelings of gratitude,” Nawaf said Kuwait provided aid for the railway restoration “in return for Japan’s support at the time of the Persian Gulf War.”
In February, the Sanriku Railway in hard-hit Iwate Prefecture was able to purchase new cars with funds provided by Kuwait and resume part of its operations.
Later that day, Abe met with the prime minister of Kuwait, Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
Abe and Jaber were to issue a joint statement after their meeting.
It is expected to refer to bilateral cooperation in the improvement of underground railways, solar power generating facilities and desalination technologies.
The two sides are also likely to express “serious concerns” about North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.
