Mega-solar power plant taking shape in tsunami-hit park
English Description

HIGASHI-MATSUSHIMA, Miyagi Prefecture--Workers have installed panels at a park here in what is expected to be the first mega-solar power plant in the disaster area of the Tohoku region.

The park in Higashi-Matsushima’s Nobiru district was flooded by the tsunami spawned by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011.

The plant, scheduled to start operations in October, is expected to generate 2.1 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, which will be sold to Tohoku Electric Power Co. That output can cover the annual needs of about 600 households.

Trading house Mitsui & Co. will manage the facility on 47,000 square meters of land rented from the city.
