Many of the residents of Fukushima Prefecture had to evacuate their homes following the nuclear crisis triggered by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. In the process, several pets were left behind, and a number of cats and dogs are still living within 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) of the nuclear power plants. One month after the earthquake, we visited to observe the animal rescue operations.
