Massive LNG tanks being built in Sendai
English Description

SENDAI--Construction of two huge liquefied natural gas tanks is under way at a thermal power plant near the port of Sendai that is operated by Tohoku Electric Power Co.

The LNG tanks at the Shin-Sendai thermal power plant are expected to support reconstruction activities in areas affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

The pair of tanks can store 320,000 kiloliters of LNG, which can meet the monthly electricity needs of 1.8 million households.

The cylinder-shaped, metal tanks are 54 meters high and 80 meters in diameter. They are covered by concrete walls, and will be able to withstand the most powerful earthquake on the Japanese scale of intensity.

The tanks are scheduled to be completed in 2015.

According to Shimizu Corp., which is carrying out the project, the tanks will be among the largest ever constructed on the ground in Japan.
