KORIYAMA, Fukushima Prefecture--Big Palette Fukushima convention center was abuzz with excitement on April 29 as the 2014 Tokyo Girls Collection fashion show came to Fukushima Prefecture.

The show "Smile! Smile! Smile!" was held for the first time in the Tohoku region to lift the spirits of people who were affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and nuclear power plant accident.

The convention center in Koriyama served as the prefecture’s main evacuation center.

Officials said 9,800 people packed Big Palette to cheer the models and 13 elementary schoolchildren from the prefecture, some of whom still grappling with life as evacuees.

The children joined actress and fashion model Airi Matsui, a native of Fukushima Prefecture, and other celebrities in strutting down the catwalk.
