Prince William to tour disaster-stricken areas in Japan, then go on to China
English Description

LONDON--Britain's Prince William will visit Japan this month and tour Fukushima Prefecture and other areas devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, the Royal Household said.

The Duke of Cambridge is scheduled to arrive in Japan on Feb. 26 and stay until March 1. He will then visit China from March 1-4.

It will be the first time William has visited the two countries alone. His wife, the duchess of Cambridge, will not accompany him as she is in the latter stages of her second pregnancy. She is due to give birth in April.

During his stay, William will visit the prefectures of Fukushima and Miyagi, the two most-affected by the disaster that generated a nuclear catastrophe at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

William will also attend an event in Tokyo as part of a British government campaign to promote British products and innovative technologies. The prince will also visit Tokyo's trendy Daikanyama district and the studios of Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK).

It will also mark the first time a senior member of the immediate British royal family has traveled to Japan since Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, visited in 2008 with his wife, the Royal Household said.
