FOUR YEARS AFTER: NTT Docomo to offer foreign language quake, tsunami alert service
English Description

NTT Docomo Inc. is set to start a service that translates earthquake and tsunami alert messages into multiple languages for users of Android-based smartphones.

The Japan Meteorological Agency currently issues warnings in Japanese to mobile phone users when seismic waves are first detected, and also if there is a risk of tsunami.

Starting from April, NTT Docomo’s service will translate those warnings into English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Portuguese on phones that run the Android mobile operating system.

The telephone carrier has yet to decide if it will offer the service for users of Apple Inc.'s iPhone, which is based on the iOS operating system, or other conventional cellphones, NTT Docomo officials said March 10.
