Tsunamis are caused by a sudden displacement of gigantic water masses due to the earthquakes underneath the sea. The tsunami in the 3/11 earthquake formed because the Pacific plate was subducting at a rate of several cm/year beneath the Eurasian plate. Eventually the stress between the two plates were too great, and the Pacific plate snapped up. This sudden snap caused a huge displacement of water and caused tsunamis to form during the 3/11 earthquake. The tsunamis then went towards shores in multiple waves, not just one. It was reported that the highest tsunami wave to hit Japan was about 40ft causing mass destruction in several parts of Japan, one being the Fukushima Daiichi Plant resulting in the nuclear meltdown.
