Tomioka, my home town, is surrounded on both sides by the Fukushima nuclear power plants. The center of town is about 10 kilometers south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, and another plant, Fukushima Daini, runs along the southern edge of the city, bordering the town of Naraha. On April 22, 2011, one month after the Fukushima disaster, Tomioka was designated as a disaster area, restricting entry to fallout crews and other authorized personnel.
