最近暖かくなってきたせいか、現場には今までなかった臭いが立ちこめるようになった。それはヘドロからも、田んぼからも、瓦礫からも湧いてくる。何かが腐っている臭いだ。瓦礫も津波直後よりはずいぶん片付いた。そしたら見渡す限り何にもなくなって、かえって悲しくなるな。こういうのはテレビで見てるだけでは分からない感覚だ。アスベストも飛んでるらしくて、会社から防塵マスクを支給された。あれ着けっど暑いし、息苦しいんだな。んでも着けないとおこられるし。海岸で作業すると、マスクをしていない首とか額が異様に黒くなるんだ。海辺は紫外線が強いんだべげんと、それだけではない気がする。放射能のせいかな。

Perhaps because it's gotten warmer recently, a strange smell has started to permeate the work site that wasn't there before. It seems to be coming from the sludge, the rice paddies, and the rubble. It's the smell of something rotting. The rubble has been cleared away considerably since immediately after the tsunami. But now that there's nothing left as far as the eye can see, it's even more depressing. This is a feeling you can't understand just by watching it on TV. Apparently, there's also asbestos in the air, so the company gave us dust masks. They're hot and make it hard to breathe, but we'll get scolded if we don't wear them. When we work on the coast, our necks and foreheads, the parts not covered by the mask, get unusually dark. I know the sunlight is strong by the sea, but I feel like it's not just that. Could it be because of the radiation?
