It was a week after the earthquake. While clearing debris on the coast, we found a body. Upon closer inspection, we noticed that the ring finger of its left hand was missing. That day, we found another body, and that one also had its left ring finger missing. I don't want to think about it, but someone might be cutting off the fingers with a knife to steal the rings. When I asked the police officer who came after we contacted them, he said that bodies with only the ring finger missing are not uncommon. The fingers are swollen, so the rings can't be removed without cutting them off. He also said that sometimes they find bodies with the entire left wrist missing, apparently because someone stole the watch.
