What I remember from 3/11

I was in seventh grade when it happened patiently waiting for the school day to end when the earthquake happened. I wasn't surprised or scared because earthquakes are frequent in Japan, and took the procedure of going under my desk and waiting for it to end. But then it got bigger and stronger; at this point I realized that the damage would probably be greater than most earthquakes (I didn't think it would be as great as it was). We went on the field, I remember it being chaotic, and thinking that this event was going to be the topic of conversation for a while. I distinctly remember being super hungry on the bus ride home as the roads were super crowded and it was taking hours to get home - cellphone connection was super poor, as was wifi, so I just gave up trying to contact my parents after about an hour. I assumed that they knew I was alright. I got home at about 9, stopped by the conbini with my older sister for food and relieved to find that there were still things left. We weren't scared or devastated, in fact we knew nothing really and I didn't really care to think that the earthquake affected anyone but people in Tokyo. I remember feeling excited that something crazy was happening, a feeling that in retrospect is inappropriate but that's how I felt at the time. When I got home, nothing was broken, in fact, the only thing that was different was maybe a cup fell off a table and the picture frames were all crooked. My parents were frantic, eyes glued on the tv, trying to call immediate family members and important friends, but my siblings and I were just chatting our friends and surfing Facebook to see what everybody else was posting, if people got home, if we missed anything interesting afterward, and went to sleep glad that we didn't have school the following morning.
