English Description
5 years ago, I was sitting in my middle school class at the American School in Japan when the earthquake struck. We all thought it was just an earthquake that was a little stronger than usual, but the shaking didn't stop. Everybody got under the desks except for this one boy with round glasses called Sam, who looked confused and disoriented. Another girl, Sarah, tried to get him under the table but he didn't until the teacher told him to get down. All the crayons shook and fell out of their containers, dropping on the floor. After the earthquake stopped, we all filed out and went towards the field. It was interesting because some of us took it very seriously but some were joking around half-heartedly, not really sure how to act. People were crying and everyone who had a phone were giving them to others so that people could contact their families. I remember this girl called Talia who was crying and used my phone and was extremely scared when her mother didn't pick up. I told her she was probably okay, that the earthquake didn't seem too big. But then that's when we heard that the earthquake magnitude was abnormally high and that some buildings were damaged. I talked to my mother and she said the whole family was okay, so I wasn't that worried because I didn't know how big the disaster was. We all got onto the buses for early release but the traffic was so bad that it nearly took us 8 hours to get home. That whole time, people were following along with what was happening and I heard that Disneyland's parking lot was damaged because the concrete liquified from all the shaking. We had to stop the buses for bathroom breaks and to get food from the convenience store but most of the stores were completely out of food. Some of the high schoolers on my bus left the bus and decided to walk home. We finally got home, and then the next morning we heard about the reactors.
