At 21:26 on April 14, 2016, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake (measuring the maximum shindo 7 on the Japanese intensity scale) occurred in the area of Kumamoto City located above the epicenter. It was followed on April 16th at 1:25 by a larger earthquake of magnitude 7.3 (shindo 6+) and strong aftershocks causing severe damage. Currently, several research teams of IRIDeS are analyzing and investigating the causes and the aftermath of this major disaster.
