Old documents written in cursive script, different from modern hand-writing. The amount of old documents recording daily life in the early modern period surviving in Japan is overwhelming, and unique. Many documents were damaged by the tsunami during the 2011 earthquake in Eastern Japan. Here we see restoration work in progress. It is done by an NPO called the Miyagi Network for Preserving Historical Materials. Let's think "Can we bring back history" or not. And you can see what great gifts old documents have left us not only in the historical study.

日本は世界でも珍しいほど、多くの古文書が残されている国であると言う。旧家や寺に残された、証書や日々の暮らしについての記録。それらは地域と、そこにかつて生きてきた人々の歴史である。2011年の東日本大震災では、これらの古文書の多くも被害を受けた。NPO法人宮城歴史資料保全ネットワーク(宮城資料ネット)は震災後、一月もたたないうちから被災地へ入り、歴史資料のレスキューを行ってきた。倒壊した蔵から古文書などを救い出し、修復して、保存のために撮影をする。今までに撮った古文書の画像は110万点にもなる。それでも震災から一年のうちにレスキューをしたものしか終わっていないのだ。震災から4年半。津波の被害を受けた場所の風景は大きく変わり、震災前の姿を思い出すことは難しくなってきている。いつか、そこには新しい町ができるだろう。その時、それまでの町の歴史と人の営みは引き継がれていくのだろうか？宮城資料ネットの活動を皮切りに、市民ボランティアの方々、全国各地の歴史資料ネットワークに取材し、「被災地の歴史はよみがえるのか？」 について考えた。
