Item Description
Do you remember the earthquake and tsunami hit Tohoku region 7 years ago? Otsuchi Town where our Sashiko artisans live has greatly suffered from this disaster. Approximately 40 women, including 20s to 83-year-old ladies who participate in the Otsuchi Sashiko project, all experienced great sorrow. This project was launched with the aim of re-creating their motivations for living and supporting their independence. 6 years have passed since then, with the cooperation by local NPOs, this project has became an essential part of KUON. Women who were originally amateurs now become splendid sashiko artisans. There are few artisans who can do Sashiko and repairing as much as they do in Japan. Now that the technology has developed, Sashiko and BORO repairing is a very time-consuming task. However their work has unique flavors that can not be expressed by machine. As winter is long and very cold in Tohoku region, culture of Sashiko and BORO has been transmitted since ancient times and their work has also led to the succession of Japanese culture.
