The area of Hisanohama Elementary School of Iwaki City was located within the 30km radius from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. However, the Municipality of Iwaki made an independent decision and asked the residents there for voluntary evacuation soon after the nuclear accident. Then the elementary school gave children classes by renting some space of other elementary school in the city. In October 2011, they returned to their school building and restarted classes there. Before that, decontamination of the school premises was performed and radiation levels were measured to prove safety in specific values, and then the environment was in place for children to study again in the school. The efforts for children's safety are still continued.
