On Day 2 of the third Reference Group Meeting on Nuclear & Radiological Emergency Preparedness, when the participants were traveling to Namie Town through Kawamata Town and Iitate Village, they were able to look at, from a bus window, a temporary storage area for soil from decontamination which was still underway.
All residents of Namie Town were forced to evacuate due to the damage from the tsunami and also the radiation effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. After listening to the reconstruction plan and the current situation of the town from an official of the Namie Municipal Government, the participants visited the central part of the town which has been left as it was since the evacuation and an area where the tsunami debris finally started to be removed, followed by a floral tribute at a cenotaph for the Great East Japan Earthquake victims of the town.
