The thyroid screening only of the target group (age 0-18 at time of the disaster) was not quite reasonable at remote areas. Two thirds of thyroid cancer cases have been detected in older age group.
In March, a mid-term evaluation of the programme was carried out. One of the most important recommendations of the evaluation were, thyroid screening target group should be enlarged to age 0-40 at the time of disaster.
The funding situation for the programme in 2006 and onwards was not secure. Therefore, it was necessary to draw attention of the international community.
