English Title
Looking back on the relief activities (by Kitano)_Relief activities by the Nagahama Red Cross Hospital on Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
English Description

This content is about an essay contributed by one of the second relief team members from the Japanese Red Cross Nagahama Hospital. The team arrived at the JRCS Fukushima Chapter but made a decision to leave Fukushima without providing relief activities. They made the decision by referring to other chapters' decision and the air radiation levels in the affected area:
"We traveled to Fukushima by measuring air radiation dose. We expected to be exposed to only a small amount of radiation and we understood that we could protect thyroid gland from being exposed to radiation by taking stable iodine tablets. However, possibilities of the accident status to worse made us fear strongly. We arrived at the JRC Fukushima Chapter. However, because the relief teams from other chapters decided to leave Fukushima due to high air radiation doses, we made a decision to leave Fukushima without providing relief activities. On the way back to our hospital, we measured air radiation doses at services plazas and rest areas along the expressway for assisting teams that might be dispatched after our team. I thought that the Red Cross should develop its guidelines for possible future nuclear and radiological emergencies."
