The new phase of CHARP (Chernobyl Humanitarian Assistance and Rehabilitation Programme) became fully operational. Over 58,000 persons were medically screened during the first nine months of the year with indications that confirmed cases of thyroid cancer in adults and children are significantly higher than last year's totals.
International experts agreed total 20 years monitoring to detect any new diseases to be needed. The Federation is one of the very few humanitarian organizations be able to claim a long-standing commitment to assisting people affected by the disaster.
